TARS on Guard: Security and Ethics
You have built something powerful: a robot that can see, hear, control your home, and reach the internet. That power is exactly why this lesson matters. TARS is precisely the kind of always-listening, camera-equipped, network-connected device that Month 5 taught you to protect and to think carefully about, so here you turn those lessons on the robot itself, giving it useful, gentle awareness while securing it and respecting everyone around it.
Useful awareness, not surveillance
TARS can watch your own space in helpful ways using the camera detection from Month 3. It might notice motion and mention it, greet a family member, or alert you if something moves while you are away and then use its Home Assistant link to turn on a light. The line to hold is clear: these are convenience and awareness features for your own home and the people who live there, not tools for watching others. Keep them scoped to your space and your household, and design them to assist rather than intrude.
TARS is a device you must secure
A robot with a camera, a microphone, network access, and the ability to control your home is a valuable target, so you harden it exactly as Month 5 taught. Keep its software and the Pi updated so known holes are closed, use strong unique credentials, never expose it directly to the internet, keep its API keys and access tokens private, and disable any services it does not need. You spent a whole month learning how attackers think; the most immediate use of that knowledge is protecting the capable machine you just built. Run the Month 5 defensive checklist against TARS the same way you would any device that holds the keys to your home.
The ethics of an always-listening robot
TARS can see and hear, which carries real privacy responsibility, the heart of Month 5. Anyone in your home should know it has a camera and a microphone and should be comfortable with that, and guests especially deserve a clear heads-up. Think about what it records and where that goes, and favor local processing, a local language model and on-device speech, so that nothing leaves your network. An always-listening device is only ethical when the people it can hear understand it and agree to it. This is not a footnote; it is the difference between a helpful companion and something that quietly erodes the trust of the people around it.
Capability with responsibility
This lesson is really the whole program's theme made physical. You have built something genuinely powerful, and power carries responsibility. TARS should protect and assist the people in your home and never harm or spy on anyone; its default behaviors should be respectful, humans should stay in control of anything important, and the trust of everyone around it is ultimately the thing you are protecting. Build it to be the kind of technology you would want in your own home, and in everyone else's.

A TARS that is secured, privacy-respecting, and honest about its senses is a better robot, not a more limited one. Finishing responsibly is part of finishing well, and it is the last skill you carry out of this program before the capstone.
